Cruise Ship Tourism in Indonesia Holds Great Potential for Boosting Tourist Numbers

Indonesia is poised to capitalize on the growing trend of cruise ship tourism. Director of Special Tourism at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Itok Parikesit, has expressed the ministry’s full support for the development of special tourism for cruise ships. He is optimistic that this sector can significantly increase the number of tourists visiting the country, ultimately benefiting the national economy by strengthening the rupiah exchange rate.

In a recent speech delivered aboard the Resorts World One ship in Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, on Sunday, June 16, 2024, Itok Parikesit highlighted the multifaceted advantages of cruise ship tourism. “The launch of Resorts World One not only makes Tanjung Priok Harbor a port, but also a central investment and destination for more tourists to explore local destinations,” he said.

The establishment of Tanjung Priok Harbor as a key cruise ship hub is expected to draw more international visitors, providing them with opportunities to discover Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, and diverse ecosystems. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Indonesia’s tourism appeal and attract a high-spending segment of tourists.

By offering a unique blend of luxury travel and local exploration, cruise ship tourism can drive economic growth in port cities and surrounding areas. Local businesses, from hospitality and dining to retail and transportation, stand to gain from the influx of cruise ship passengers. This aligns with the ministry’s objective to create sustainable tourism models that benefit local communities while preserving the country’s natural and cultural assets.

The Indonesian government’s commitment to fostering special tourism segments like cruise ship tourism demonstrates its proactive approach to revitalizing the tourism sector post-pandemic. With continued investment and strategic planning, Indonesia is well-positioned to become a premier destination for cruise travelers.
