Young international student in Indonesia for a student visa and education journey

Student Visa Indonesia: E30, E30A, E30B & Student KITAS Guide

Foreign nationals who want to study in Indonesia need an immigration pathway that matches their education program. The current student-visa framework includes E30, E30A, E30B, E30E and E30F. The correct category depends on the type of education, institution, and study arrangement.

A Student Visa Indonesia is only one part of the immigration process. Depending on the pathway, students may also need to complete the relevant ITAS (Izin Tinggal Terbatas) or Limited Stay Permit process after entering Indonesia.

This guide explains the current student visa categories, requirements, government fees, application process, Student ITAS and KITAS, extensions, family options, and important restrictions for international students in Indonesia.

What Is a Student Visa in Indonesia?

A Student Visa Indonesia is the immigration visa pathway for foreign nationals undertaking qualifying education in Indonesia. The current framework separates student visas according to education type and special program.

Before applying, identify the correct education category, confirm admission and sponsorship arrangements, prepare the required documents, and check the post-arrival process that applies to the selected visa.

Student Visa vs ITAS vs KITAS

A student visa and a residence permit are not the same thing. The visa is part of the entry pathway, while ITAS (Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is the Limited Stay Permit used for Indonesia Residency.

In everyday practice, the term “Student KITAS” is often used when referring to a student’s Indonesia KITAS. However, ITAS is the underlying immigration residence permit, while KITAS is the common practical term associated with that status.

TermMeaning
Student VisaVisa used for the relevant student entry pathway.
ITASIzin Tinggal Terbatas, or Limited Stay Permit, providing temporary residence status.
KITASCommon practical term associated with the limited-stay residence permit/card.
e-ITASElectronic documentation of the Limited Stay Permit.
Re-entry PermitImmigration permission associated with leaving and returning to Indonesia where required.

The practical journey can therefore be understood as:

Education admission → Sponsor or guarantor → Student Visa → Entry into Indonesia → ITAS/e-ITAS → Residence compliance → Re-entry arrangements where applicable

Types of Student Visa in Indonesia

The current official Immigration visa list identifies five student-visa categories: E30, E30A, E30B, E30E and E30F.

VisaMain purposeTypical pathway
E30Non-formal educationLanguage, vocational/professional and other qualifying non-formal programs

Student Visa Indonesia categories E30, E30A, E30B, E30E and E30F

E30 Student Visa

E30 is used for qualifying non-formal education. Since July 15, 2025, foreign nationals can apply for E30 for programs such as language courses, vocational or professional schools and other qualifying non-formal education.

The application is submitted online through the immigration visa system and requires a guarantor. The guarantor may be an individual or the non-formal educational institution.

For the non-formal E30 pathway, the announced stay options are one or two years. The government PNBP is IDR 6,000,000 for one year and IDR 8,500,000 for two years.

The E30 pathway requires documents such as a passport valid for at least six months, proof of sufficient living funds, a recent color photograph, and supporting education and guarantor documents as applicable.

E30A Student Visa

E30A is the Primary and Secondary Student Visa for qualifying school education in Indonesia.

The 2025 Immigration announcement added a four-year stay option for E30A and E30B.

The announced government PNBP is:

  • IDR 6,000,000 for one year
  • IDR 8,500,000 for two years
  • IDR 12,000,000 for four years

A guarantor may be an individual or the relevant educational institution.

E30B Higher Education Student Visa

E30B is the current Higher Education Student Visa.

Under the current classification, it covers higher education including:

  • Diploma programs
  • Bachelor’s degrees
  • Master’s degrees
  • Doctoral degrees

Students should coordinate the application with their university because admission evidence, sponsorship documents and institution-specific study paperwork can vary.

The announced government PNBP is:

  • IDR 6,000,000 for one year
  • IDR 8,500,000 for two years
  • IDR 12,000,000 for four years

What Happened to E30C and E30D?

E30C and E30D still appear on some older university and immigration-information pages. They should not automatically be treated as separate current higher-education visa categories.

Indonesia issued a new visa classification in 2025. Under the current classification, higher education is consolidated under E30B.

Applicants should therefore verify the current official classification rather than relying on an older page that separates bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral education into E30C and E30D.

Existing visas or stay permits issued under an earlier classification may remain valid according to the conditions and expiry of the documents that were issued.

E30E Student Visa for Special Economic Zones

E30E is the Special Economic Zone Student Visa for qualifying education at institutions located in designated Special Economic Zones.

The exact institution and SEZ pathway can affect practical requirements, so applicants should verify the current requirements before submitting an application.

Do not assume that fees or document requirements for E30, E30A or E30B automatically apply to E30E.

E30F Student Exchange Visa

E30F is the Student Exchange Visa for qualifying exchange education programs.

The exchange arrangement, host institution and education level determine the practical documentation and workflow.

E30F should not be confused with a standard degree-student pathway. Exchange students should follow the current instructions of the Indonesian host institution and confirm the appropriate visa category before applying.

Student Visa Requirements Indonesia

Requirements depend on the E30 category and education program. Applicants should expect a combination of immigration documents, education documents and sponsorship or guarantor documents.

RequirementPurpose
Valid passportIdentity and international travel document; the minimum validity depends on the pathway.
Recent color photographVisa application requirement.
Proof of sufficient fundsEvidence that the student can support living expenses.
Sponsor or guarantor documentationSupports the immigration application under the applicable pathway.
Admission or education documentsShows the purpose and legitimacy of the intended study.
Study approval, where applicableEducation authorization required for certain pathways.

For the E30 non-formal education pathway, the official Immigration announcement identifies a passport valid for at least six months, proof of living expenses of at least USD 2,000, and a recent color photograph.

Other pathways may require additional documents depending on the education institution, program and immigration category.

Government Requirements vs University Requirements

A common mistake is treating every document requested by a university as a universal Immigration requirement.

Schools and universities may request additional documents for:

  • Admission
  • Sponsorship
  • Academic administration
  • Insurance
  • Health checks
  • Institutional compliance
  • Enrollment
  • Exchange-program administration

Admission letters, enrollment confirmations, academic records and institutional forms may therefore be required by the school or university without being universal government requirements.

Always distinguish the institution’s checklist from the Immigration checklist.

How Much Does a Student Visa in Indonesia Cost?

Government immigration fees are separate from university tuition, accommodation, insurance, document preparation, translation or legalization, and professional immigration-service fees.

How to Apply for a Student Visa Indonesia

Student Visa Indonesia application process from admission and sponsorship to visa, arrival and ITAS or KITAS

Step 1 — Choose the Correct Education Pathway

Identify whether the program falls under E30, E30A, E30B, E30E or E30F. The education level and type of program should be confirmed before starting the visa application.

Step 2 — Secure Admission or an Education Placement

Obtain the relevant admission, enrollment or exchange documentation from the Indonesian institution.

Step 3 — Confirm the Sponsor or Guarantor

Confirm who will act as guarantor and what supporting documents are required for the selected visa category.

Step 4 — Prepare the Immigration Documents

Prepare the required passport, photograph, financial evidence and education or sponsorship documents. Additional documents may be required depending on the institution and visa category.

Step 5 — Submit the Visa Application

Use the official immigration visa application channel and follow the requirements for the selected category.

Step 6 — Receive the Visa

After approval and payment of applicable fees, receive the issued visa according to the current process.

Step 7 — Enter Indonesia

Enter Indonesia using the appropriate student visa and comply with its conditions.

Step 8 — Complete the Post-Arrival Residence Process

Where required, complete the relevant ITAS/e-ITAS and related immigration procedures after arrival. The exact post-arrival process depends on the visa category and the student’s circumstances.

Student Visa to Student ITAS/KITAS: What Happens After Arrival?

A Student Visa is not the same thing as the student’s entire residence status.

For a limited-stay education pathway, the student may need to complete the relevant post-arrival process to obtain ITAS, commonly referred to in practice as KITAS.

The practical flow is:

Admission → Sponsor/Guarantor → Student Visa → Entry → ITAS/e-ITAS → Residence compliance → Re-entry arrangements where applicable

The exact sequence and documentation depend on the visa category and circumstances.

Students should follow current Immigration instructions and the guidance of their educational institution rather than relying on an old KITAS checklist.

How Long Is a Student Visa / Student ITAS Valid?

Validity depends on the visa category and the period granted.

For E30, E30A and E30B, the 2025 announcement established one- and two-year options and added a four-year option for E30A and E30B.

Do not confuse the visa’s validity or permitted stay with the validity of an ITAS issued or completed as part of the residence process.

Check the specific expiry dates on the immigration documents issued for the student.

Can Student ITAS Be Extended?

Yes, where the applicable requirements are met.

Current Immigration service guidance states that an ITAS with a period of up to one year may be submitted for extension as early as 30 days before expiry and no later than the expiry date.

For an ITAS with a period of more than one year, the extension may be submitted as early as three months before expiry, subject to the applicable rules.

For education ITAS of up to one year for students, the extension is handled by the Head of the Immigration Office under the applicable service framework.

Students should begin the extension process early and verify the current requirements for their specific ITAS.

Can International Students Work in Indonesia?

No. A Student Visa or Student ITAS is intended for education and does not by itself authorize employment in Indonesia.

Students should not assume that a student residence permit allows paid employment, providing services for compensation, or another activity requiring a different immigration purpose.

If a student intends to work in Indonesia, the appropriate work-related immigration pathway must be considered separately.

Can a Student Bring Family to Indonesia?

Eligible family members may have their own family or accompanying immigration pathway, depending on the student’s status and the family relationship.

Each family member should have the immigration status applicable to their own circumstances rather than assuming that the student’s visa automatically covers the entire family.

For family planning, review the applicable Indonesia Family Visa pathway and coordinate the applications with the student’s education and residence status.

A Student Visa should not be selected simply because the applicant is entering Indonesia while also planning to conduct another primary activity.

The immigration purpose should match the actual activity in Indonesia.

Common Mistakes When Applying for a Student Visa

1. Choosing a visa category before confirming the actual education program

The correct visa depends on the education level, program and institutional arrangement.

2. Using outdated E30C or E30D information

Older websites may still separate higher education into E30B, E30C and E30D. Applicants should check the current classification before applying.

3. Confusing the Student Visa with ITAS

A visa and a residence permit serve different immigration functions.

4. Treating KITAS as the visa itself

KITAS is commonly used in practice to describe a limited-stay residence status, while ITAS is the underlying Limited Stay Permit.

5. Mixing government immigration fees with university or professional service fees

Tuition, accommodation, insurance and professional services are separate from government immigration PNBP.

6. Assuming every university document is a universal Immigration requirement

Institution-specific documents can be different from government immigration requirements.

7. Assuming Student ITAS automatically gives permission to work

A student immigration pathway does not by itself authorize employment.

8. Waiting until the last days of ITAS validity before preparing an extension

Students should begin preparing their extension before the permitted filing window becomes urgent.

9. Using an old checklist

Immigration classifications and application procedures can change. Always verify the current requirements before submitting an application.
