Why Indonesian Passport Holders Can’t Get a Free Visa to South Korea

Travel enthusiasts and business travelers in Indonesia often wonder why they can’t get a free visa to South Korea. Despite the close ties and significant travel between the two countries, several factors influence this visa policy.

Visa on Arrival vs. Visa-Free Entry

Currently, South Korean citizens visiting Indonesia enjoy the benefit of a Visa on Arrival (VOA). This means they can obtain a visa upon entry into Indonesia, which is a step below a visa-free arrangement but still offers significant convenience.

However, the situation is different for Indonesian passport holders traveling to South Korea. They are not eligible for a visa on arrival and must apply for a visa in advance through the South Korean embassy. This discrepancy raises questions about the visa policies between the two nations.

Reasons Behind the Policy
1. No Visa on Arrival in South Korea

One primary reason for this policy is that South Korea does not offer a visa on arrival system. Travelers to South Korea must secure their visa before their journey, either through a visa-free arrangement (for eligible countries) or a visa application at the embassy. As South Korea does not provide a visa on arrival, the reciprocity in visa arrangements is not straightforward.

Another significant issue influencing visa policies is the number of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) entering South Korea illegally. This concern is a critical factor in the ongoing discussions about visa exemptions. The South Korean government is cautious about granting visa-free access due to the risk of illegal immigration.

2. Illegal Migrant Workers

Official Statements

An official explained, “In South Korea, you don’t have a visa on arrival. So you can’t do it apple to apple. So it’s either visa-free or a short visit from the embassy.”

This statement highlights the complexities of visa reciprocity and the unique immigration challenges faced by both countries.
