3 Kings Who Don’t Need a Passport When Going Abroad

When you travel abroad, you generally need a passport, especially if going to a country that requires you to obtain a special visa. But did you know that there are three people who are exempt from this rule? They do not need a passport to travel anywhere in the world. These individuals are:

  • King Charles III of England
  • Japanese Emperor Naruhito
  • Empress Masako of Japan

Before King Charles III, this privilege rested with Queen Elizabeth II. So, what is the reason behind this unique exemption?

The Privilege of the British Monarchy

In the case of the British Empire, this is a privilege held by the reigning king or queen. The British passport contains the following request:

“Her British Majesty’s Secretary of State requests and requires in Her Majesty’s name all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.”

This request is made in the name of the monarch, so it would be redundant for the monarch themselves to carry a passport.

The Privilege of the Japanese Monarchy

In Japan, the situation is similar but comes from a different cultural and administrative perspective. A ministry document dated May 10, 1971, stated that it was highly inappropriate to issue passports to the Emperor or Empress. The document also added that it would be inappropriate for the Emperor to undergo immigration or visa procedures using a passport as an ordinary citizen.

This historical and cultural respect for the emperor’s position means they are exempt from the usual travel documentation.

What About Everyone Else?

While these monarchs enjoy the rare privilege of traveling without a passport, the rest of us must adhere to international travel regulations. This includes obtaining the necessary visas for travel.
