Usaba Gumang Festival: A Sacred Tradition in Karangasem, Bali

In October 2024, the Usaba Gumang and Usaba Kadulu Gede ceremonies will once again bring the Bugbug Traditional Village in Karangasem, Bali, to life. Held from October 16-18, 2024, this sacred festival is part of the island’s cultural heritage, involving religious rituals at the Gumang Temple.

The Usaba Gumang ceremony occurs every year during the sasih kapat (fourth month in the Balinese calendar). During even years, like 2024, the ceremony expands to include three neighboring villages: Jasri, Ngis, and Banyakdem. In odd years, the event focuses solely on Bugbug Village. This rotating scale of participation reflects the deep connection between the villages and their shared traditions.

Key Highlights of the Usaba Gumang Ceremony

The rituals at Gumang Temple, nestled on a hill, are the main focus of the three-day event:

  • October 16 (15:00-17:00): Procession to Gumang Temple
  • October 17 (09:00-12:00): Procession descends from the temple
  • October 18 (09:30-12:00): Return procession to Bugbug Village

During these times, local residents, devotees, and tourists participate in or observe the procession, marked by prayers, offerings, and vibrant traditional Balinese attire. The atmosphere is filled with devotion as the people pay their respects to the deities and celebrate the blessings bestowed upon their village.

Traffic Advisory for Visitors

For tourists and visitors traveling through the Bugbug area, especially near Sanghyang Ambu, please be mindful of possible traffic disruptions. The main road will be affected during the procession times as the sacred journey takes place between Bugbug Village and Gumang Temple. Consider postponing your trip or taking alternative routes to avoid delays.

This unique festival offers a rare chance to witness Bali’s rich cultural and spiritual traditions firsthand, providing a deep connection to the local customs that have been preserved for generations.
